Life "on" the Beaverkill

Passing through the region on a late February afternoon, I drove the length of the rivers from Livingston Manor to Deposit.  Not surprisingly, but still disappointing, the entire region is encased in ice.  No pool, or riffle, from exit 96 to 84 showed enough of itself to be called fishable.  Nature seldom disappoints, however.  I was treated to an up close encounter with a whitetail at the end of Cairns.  I peered up and over the snowbank and caught a good look at her thick, Catskills winter coat, before she fled across the river.  She turned a fairly sullen look on my face to a quick smile.

  1. Thanks for the update, Tom. It's coming to a head now and by next weekend we may have some promising temps. Is that deer running across the river? Wow! That's impressive ice!

    1. Yeah, it felt good that we turned the calendar to March! Sure enough, that deer ran right across the river--from the tail of the pool all the way to the middle of the pool before it climbed uphill! I don't think it was her first time on the river either, it's covered with deer tracks. Kind of sums it up! I see a couple of warm days forecasted for the middle of this month; keep the faith! -T
